1976-1977

Boy's Varsity Basketball

Coached by Mr. Phil Gordon, the 1976-77 Boy's Varsity Basketball Team won the Tri-Valley League Championship and the Section 3 Class B Championship. The team finished the season with an overall record of 21-2, which was also a school record, and ranked 7th in New York State. Three team members earned All-League Honors: Tom Markert, Don Pfohl and Mike Rasmussen.

Tom Markert

Tom Markert graduated from Chittenango High School in 1977.  A 3-sport athlete, Tom excelled in soccer, basketball, and baseball.  

Tom played four years as a starting forward on the Varsity Boys Soccer Team.  

Tom’s favorite sport was basketball.  He was a three-year starter who scored over 1000 points in his high school career. In his sophomore year, he was leading rebounder with 12 rebounds per game and scored 9 points per game.  As a junior, Tom was leading scorer with 17 points per game and leading scorer his senior year with 19 points per game. Serving as co-captain in his junior and senior year, Tom’s athletic skills earned him selection to the Tri-Valley League Second Team and Tri-Valley League first Team in his junior and senior year, respectively.  In his senior year, Tom helped the team earn the Section 3, Class B Championship.  

In baseball, Tom as a two-year starting pitcher.  In his junior year, he pitched 8 games, 35 2/3 innings with a personal record of 4 wins and 2 losses.  In his senior year, Tom helped the Boys Varsity Baseball Team earn the Tri-Valley League Championship, with a 12-2 record in which Tom pitched 11 games and 43 1/3 innings with a personal record of 5 wins and 2 losses.  

After high school graduation, Tom received a four-year scholarship to play basketball at St. Lawrence University.  Tom’s passion for basketball led him to own the Sydney Kings, a basketball team that competes in the National Basketball League of Australia.  Through his athleticism, dedication, and passion for sports, Tom Markert is a true inspiration for future athletes of Chittenango High School.

Girl's Varsity Soccer

The 1992 Girls’ Varsity Soccer Team won the Tri-Valley League Championship with an undefeated season of 13-0. They also won the Section 3 Class B Championship and for the first time in Chittenango High School history, went on to represent Chittenango in the Syracuse University Carrier Dome. At the start of their soccer season, the girls had dedicated each practice and game to their beloved Coach Robert Couse who passed away unexpectedly.
